This is a section of a very ancient Stone Age trackway that ran from the lowest fording point on the Tiber near Santa Maria in Cosmedin, along the foot of the Palatine and so eastwards, and so can be regarded as the oldest human artefact in the city. However, the street frontage and much of the rest of it looks as if it were rebuilt in modern times, and is ugly and functional. The church has a central nave with side aisles, these ending in a triple apse which is an architectural style traditionally regarded as Byzantine. Oddly, the church lacked an organ and this is because the Eastern rites usually do not use one. Dedication:
